Travellers can rediscover India at the Commonwealth GamesTourists booking flights to India for the Commonwealth Games next year can look forward to a varied holiday, the country's minister of tourism & culture said.

Kumari Selja commented that UK travellers are an important part of the tourism market for India, adding that they often travel around during their stay.

She noted: "They go [to] the beaches in Goa and they go for the wildlife, they go just about everywhere. They are really adventurous people."

Ms Selja continued that the Commonwealth Games, due to be held in Delhi next year, will give holidaymakers an opportunity to "rediscover" the country.

Statistics released by Incredible India last year revealed that foreign tourist arrivals to the destination increased by 5.6 per cent in 2008, compared with the previous 12 months.

The organisation stated that 5.37 million tourists visited the country during 2008, with the majority travelling from the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany and Japan.
