People planning holidays to India may not think of the country as a top spot for skiing but the sport will become part of the destination's major attractions in future, a travel expert has claimed.

Skiing will be the next big thing in IndiaSkiing in India could be the next big thing, according to Richard Rice, the managing director of Ski Safari.

Commenting on trends for the decade ahead as the noughties draws to a close, Mr Rice stated that the ski industry in India could really take off over the next ten years.

"While the likes of Japan, Mongolia and Chile are likely to emerge as viable ski destinations in the coming ten years, we feel that India's slopes will be the hottest draw of the next decade," he predicted.

He pointed out that Gulmarg in Kashmir has already established itself as a resort and indicated that Doodpathri and Aur at Pahalgam may follow in its footsteps.

Mr Rice's assertions come as part of the Association of Independent Tour Operators' (AITO) retrospective look at the decade that is drawing to a close along with some predictions for the future from some of its members.

AITO represents a wide range of specialist tour operators that are based in the UK but offer trips around the world.
