Holidays are one of the highlights of the yearBritish people are prepared to give up all kinds of things if it means that they can still have their holidays, one travel specialist has asserted.

Bob Atkinson, an expert at travelsupermarket.com, commented that people view their holidays as "one of the highlights of the year".

He added they will save up and sacrifice all kinds of things in order to ensure they get at least one break in a year.

"It gives us the opportunity to rest, relax, party or indulge in our interests, with more and more of us taking activity breaks, whether they are cultural, sporty or family-orientated," Mr Atkinson said.

He also noted that travellers want to know that they are getting the most for their money and are increasingly using comparison sites to make sure they get the best deals.

According to a poll released by Travelzoo on December 18th, 42 per cent of respondents intend to travel more in 2010 than they did this year.

A quarter of those surveyed stated that they would give up dining out to make sure they could afford a holiday, while 52 per cent said they would forego luxury goods to pay for a trip.
