Consumers advised to check holiday cover

Travellers have been advised to look into the level of protection they have should an airline or tour operator collapse.

Consumers advised to check holiday coverA travel expert has urged holidaymakers to check how they are protected in the event of their airline or tour operator going under.

With Globespan and Allbury recently failing, Simon McNamara, director of industry affairs for the European Regions Airline Association (ERA), has warned tourists to be careful when booking a trip.

"Any consumer who buys a product needs to look at what protection they need and how much responsibility they should take for this," he said.

Mr McNamara added that the only thing travellers can do to give themselves peace of mind is to "make sure that you are protected against any eventuality".

This includes lost luggage and accidents as well as companies collapsing, he emphasised.

ABTA - The Travel Association has again called on the government to extend the Air Travel Organiser License (Atol) scheme to cover individual as well as package bookings.

Under current rules, passengers who book a package trip through an agent are protected by Atol, while those who purchase flights and accommodation separately are not covered under the initiative.
