Jet off to India for alternative skiing holidaysBooking flights to India and travelling to the rural region of Kashmir could prove to be a great choice for an alternative ski break, according to one travel journalist.

Writing for the Observer, Tom Robbins explained that he had the "most interesting, unusual, fabulous ski trip" on his visit to Kashmir and the Himalayan resort of Gulmarg.

He commented that one of the things that makes the area so special is the "sense of space" because there are not many people staying in the mountains in this region in the north-west of the country that forms part of the border with Pakistan.

Mr Robbins described skiing past monkeys, finding leopard and bear tracks in the snow and chatting with the guides during his relaxing trip.

Although some of the facilities are more basic than in the resort's European counterparts, it does not detract from the spectacular surroundings and off-piste runs, he noted.
