Parents are increasingly turning to their children for help booking cheap family holidays, new research has revealed.

Parents are asking their children to find cheap flights to Australia, for example, to help cut the costs of family holidays, new research has discovered.

According to the Daily Mail, mums and dads are asking their offspring to seek out the best bargains on the internet in a bid to make family breaks more affordable.

The survey found that one in four children picked the destination of a family holiday in 2009, with the average 14-year-old boy more likely to be in control when it comes to activities than their father.

Internet access during the holiday is also important for many teenagers, the newspaper reported, with more than half of those polled stating that they spent up to one and half hours online each day during the trip.

Tim Wade of Best Western commented that the results indicate "how important it is to offer internet for free as it is so key to every family's holiday".

According to the Post Office Travel Services Holiday Money Report published last month, destinations such as Egypt and Dubai could be a good choice for families on a budget as the exchange rates for currencies in the nations are favourable against the pound.
