India to tackle train-top travel

People who are booking flights to India may not be greeted by the sight of people riding on top of train carriages for much longer.

Anyone who is booking flights to India later this year may not see people riding on top of train carriages in the country any more.

Health and safety officials in the nation are intending to ban the practice because of the dangers involved, a railway spokesperson told the Times of India.

This could involve stopping trains if there is even one person on the roof, the representative revealed.

Services in Mumbai will be the first to introduce the new policy, with other railways around the country likely to follow suit over the coming year.

According to the Times, the move will coincide with plans to upgrade the nation's track and rail system, which could be good news for anyone who plans to travel around India after arriving on flights to Mumbai.

There are a number of special rail tours available to holidaymakers in the country, such as the Mahaparinirvana Express, which departs from Delhi and travels to a number of destinations associated with Buddha.
