Consider taking a boat on holidays to IndiaPeople booking flights to Kolkata should think about jumping aboard a boat in the city and taking a cruise along the Hooghly River, according to one travel journalist.

Writing for the Times, Stephen Bleach explained that taking to the waters is a great way to explore India.

"It gets you right into the unspoilt heart of the country and your accommodation travels with you," he stated.

Mr Bleach described a journey through Bengal, which allows travellers to stop off at "Mogul palaces, imperial battlefields and local villages" along the way, providing a unique insight into the nation's culture.

The highlight of this particular route, according to the writer, is a visit to Murshidabad, the former capital of the nawabs, where ancient monuments sit alongside paddy fields and mango groves.

Kolkata has a lot to offer tourists, with its close proximity to beaches, hill stations, wildlife destinations and historical sights giving holidaymakers access to whatever takes their fancy, Kolkatahub.com advised.
