Holiday snaps trigger memories of smells for BritsPeople who are jetting off on flights to Thailand and other exotic locations will no doubt be planning to take plenty of photos to serve as mementos of their trip.

But new research has revealed that photos do not just bring back happy memories, they also evoke smells in our minds.

According to the survey carried out by Nikon, 47 per cent of Brits said that they could remember the smell associated with a picture.

Women are particularly mindful of scents when it comes to photography, with more than a quarter of female respondents claiming to take snaps of something that smells appealing.

Among the scents that are particularly evocative are sunscreen - which brings back memories of holidays on the beach - and candy floss which takes people back to carnivals or fair grounds.

There are certain destinations which could be more strongly associated with the sense of smell than others.

For example, people on holidays in Thailand may have visited an orchid farm or remember walking around one of the many street markets which sells a wide variety of spices.
