Madurai is beautiful and fascinatingThe Indian city of Madurai, located in Tamil Nadu in the south-east of the country, is a great place to visit, one journalist has stated.

Writing for the Times, Michael Booth described the drive up the Western Ghats to reach the city as "the most beautiful and fascinating of all, traversing an astonishing agricultural diversity".

He noted that the Meenakshi Temple, which takes its name from the goddess said to watch over the temple, boasts "a riot of colourful deities".

This place of worship has been located in the city for centuries and was rebuilt in the late 14th century following its destruction more than 100 years earlier.

Mr Booth, who has been travelling around India with his family for two months, also revealed that they were blessed by an elephant on entering the temple.

He added that they had then travelled on to Mysore for the final leg of their trip.
