An increasing number of people are looking for eco-friendly options when choosing their holidays, it has been claimed.

More travellers showing an interest in eco-tourism

More and more travellers are looking for eco-tourism options before booking flights to India, for example.

Laura Greenman, director of Ecoescape, explained that demand for environmentally-sound breaks is increasing.

However, she stressed that the industry is still a niche sector and that more needs to be done to ensure its continued development in a sustainable manner.

Commenting on why tourists are opting for eco-breaks, Ms Greenman said: "People are looking for holidays which are both different and memorable and put them in touch with local people and places."

One company which offers breaks such as this is Village Ways in India. Winner of the 2009 Responsible Tourism Award for best tour operator for cultural engagement, it provides travellers with a unique way to visit the Himalayas.

Community-owned and managed projects have been set up in the Indian region of the mountain range, offering travellers authentic cultural experiences while enjoying the spectacular natural surroundings.
