A stranded travel writer is making the most of his extended holiday in India.

A travel writer who has been stranded in India as a result of volcanic ash clouding up UK airspace is making the most of his time in the country.

Wanderlust writer and photographer Mark Stratton described his experience with travel delays due to the eruption in Iceland as an "extended vacation" in an email to the publication's deputy editor.

He added that he has decided to maximise his time in India by exploring the Punjab for a few days, rather than remain in the airport in Delhi.

"Always wanted to see the Golden Temple and don't see the point of laying on the floor of the airport as is the current scene," he said.

He added that he is provisionally scheduled to fly back to the UK on April 23rd if the flight restrictions are lifted, in the meantime he is spending his days in 40 degree temperatures and paying a visit to Kumbh Mela.

Mr Stratton is not alone in facing delays at the airport. While some UK and European flights are slowly resuming today, a second volcanic ash cloud from Iceland could create further restrictions.

According to the BBC, estimates indicate that 150,000 Britons are stranded abroad as a result of the volcanic eruption.
