The number of people travelling on flights to India for their holidays has risen at the beginning of this year.

Holidaymaker numbers to India on the rise

More people are taking holidays to India compared with last year, according to a new report.

The latest World Tourism Barometer from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNTWO) shows that tourist arrivals in India registered a double-digit increase in the first two months of 2010 over the same time last year.

Asia and Pacific destinations in general saw the highest growth compared with other global regions during this timeframe.

Total international tourist arrivals came to 119 million during the first two months of the year, a seven per cent increase on 2009.

"Economic results have improved significantly in recent months, with a positive impact on tourism demand," remarked Taleb Rifai, secretary-general of the UNTWO.

Some of the most popular holidays for those booking flights to India include beach getaways in the west coast destination of Goa and city breaks to Mumbai, Delhi and Agra, which is home to the Taj Mahal.
