Travellers consider volcano insurance

Natural disaster insurance would be a consideration for 73 per cent of holidaymakers, a survey has found.

Those who have booked flights to Australia in the near future may wish to consider taking out volcano insurance, after a new study has revealed that it has become popular among holidaymakers in the wake of the recent eruption in Iceland.

Some 73 per cent of HolidayExtras.com customers stated that they would consider taking out natural disaster insurance which would protect them against the financial loss and stress caused by the volcanic ash cloud.

Andrea Clayton, head of insurance for the website, said: "Travel insurance, like all other types of insurance policies where a one-off premium is paid, is not designed to cover known events."

However, 27 per cent of those questioned appear confident that such an event is not going to occur again, stating that natural disaster insurance would be a waste of money.

A new study by recruitment firm Badenoch & Clark has revealed that approximately 43 per cent of the one million Brits who got stuck abroad during the ash cloud disruption had their pay docked to cover the extra days off they took.
