Those jetting off on cheap flights to India may want to check out the potential high charges for using their mobile phone before they head off.

Mobile phone overseas charge ruling good news

A ruling by the EU on how much customers can be charged for using their mobile phones abroad has been welcomed - but those jetting off on cheap fights to India or somewhere further afield still need to be wary.

Mobile expert at Which? Ceri Stanaway said that the cap on overseas mobile phone charges is "great" and noted that in the past, there have been cases of people returning home to bills totalling "literally thousands of pounds".

However, those on cheap flights to India may want to check the charges for using their phone while they are away, as the new rules can only be used within the EU.

"What I'd like to see is all providers choosing to apply the same protections on a worldwide level," said Miss Stanaway.

Under new European Commission rules, customers using internet on their phones while abroad will have an automatic limit of £41.50 set for usage. Users will be warned by their operator when they have used 80 per cent of their limit.
