India has achieved a major milestone in the aviation history with the creation of the most modern and highly impressive Terminal 3 or T3 at New Delhi’s IGI airport. With T3, which is touted to be the largest terminal building after Dubai’s and Beijing’s and bigger than Heathrow’s T5, IGI airport becomes one of the world’s largest airports in terms of size and capacity and as per experts it is going to rank alongside Changi, Hongkong and Dubai., India has reasons to feel proud of its latest and most prestigious feat.
The state-of-the-art T3 has mind boggling features and passengers are waiting eagerly to step into this swanky Terminal. The nine storey glass and steel terminal has a sprawling area of over 5.4 million sq ft. The 78 aerobridges, 63 elevators, 35 escalators and 92 automatic walkways will make mobility within the vast terminal unimaginably smooth.
The aerobridges are designed to handle 600 passengers every hour and the pain of baggage reclaim would be drastically reduced by the carousels with the capacity to handle 12,800 bags in an hour. Add to these 95 immigration desks which would enable passengers to be whisked in and out of the airport in a short span of time. With 168 check-in counters and in-line baggage screening, long passenger queues would become a thing of past. The airport has the ability to support world’s largest passenger aircraft, Airbus A-380.
The eight lane approach to the chic airport together with the high speed metro rail link would facilitate an easy connection to the airport. The distance between the city-centre, Connaught Place and the airport can now be covered in 20 minutes with this metro link.
A whopping 20,000 sq meters of commercial area housing all top brands and a large food court, restaurants, cafes and bars along with stylish lounges and comfortable rest rooms are available for the comfort of the transient passengers. A multi-level parking facility to accommodate 4,300 cars befits the enormous size and capacity of the airport and would essentially reduce the usual parking woes. Nearly 1 million trees have been planted in and around this green and energy efficient terminal. The Terminal will be under the supervision of 3000 cameras thereby creating a safe environment.
The consortium which created this landmark structure is led by GMR and includes Germany’s Fraport, Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd, Airport Authority of India (AAI), HOK and others. The mammoth project has been completed in record time of 37 months as against the 45 months China took to build the terminal in Beijing.
