India considering elephant protectionElephants should be regarded as part of India's national heritage, claims the country's environment minister.

Jairam Ramesh believes that the move to make the animal a key part of the country's heritage could play an important role in ensuring the long-term survival of the species.

"We will soon declare elephant as a national heritage animal as they have been part of our heritage since ages [for a long time]. We need to give same [the] degree of importance to [the] elephant as is given to [the] tiger in order to protect the big animal," explained the minister.

It is also expected that the Wildlife Protection Act will be updated to ensure the creation of a National Elephants Conservation Authority during the winter session of parliament.

According to the country's Elephant Task Force (ETF), there are more than 25,000 elephants in the country but many are targeted by poachers for their desirable ivory.

The ETF is not solely concerned with wild elephants but also aims to improve conditions for India's domestic animals.
