Indian image wins international photo comp

A picture of girls posing at India's largest camel fair has been named as the winner of a Lonely Planet competition.

The photograph was taken by Sreesailam Pasupula from Mumbai and shows five women on stage at Puskar ka Mela – a camel and livestock fair held in Rajasthan for five days each year.

Over 130,000 images were submitted to the competition designed to mark the publication of Lonely Planet's 100 millionth guidebook, reports the Daily Telegraph.

Tony Wheeler, co-founder of Lonely Planet, praised the image for its "adventurous free spirit".

He added: "Our winner combined two elements of India which many… travellers will have experienced, dramatic Rajasthan wall murals and colourfully dressed Rajasthani women."

The prize was an around-the-world trip for two and the winning image, along with 50 other striking images, can now be seen online.

Across Asia on the Cheap was the first Lonely Planet guidebook and was published in 1973.
