India 'benefits from medical tourism'

The global growth in medial tourism appears to have benefitted India in recent years.

International Business Times reports that around 500,000 people are expected to travel to India for medical treatment, compared to 150,000 in 2002.

The newspaper claims that a number of factors have led to the growth in demand for overseas medical treatment including a rise in domestic waiting times, rising costs of procedures as well as the decrease in the cost of taking flights to India and other destinations.

According to cited research, in 2006 around 150,000 US citizens travelled to Latin America and Asia for medical treatment and this could increase to more than one million by the end of 2010.

Meanwhile, IANS reports a US-based healthcare company has introduced a new ranking system for Indian hospitals to help those taking flights to India for treatment to ensure they receive the best care. KEMP Healthcare will rate hospitals in various categories to produce a rating out of five stars.
