Lonely Planet to launch in IndiaLonely Planet has announced it intends to set up operations in India in the next 12 months.

The popular travel guide series will produce content written by Indian authors, which would provide those booking flights to India with an option to focus on more local events and activities.

According to the company, the growth of the travel market in the south Asian nation presents an "exciting opportunity" for it to "connect" with different audiences.

Chief executive Matt Goldberg said: "We've been distributing English language editions of Lonely Planet guidebooks in India since the early 1980s and we are India's leading publisher of international guides in English."

"We want to build on this success, and are currently in discussions with a number of potential Indian partners to help us develop local print and digital products for Indian travellers," he added.

Projections from Lonely Planet suggest that domestic tourism in India will boom in the next decade.
