South Africa gets eco brownie pointsSouth Africa has scored highly in a world survey to find the best countries for eco-friendly travel.

According to Jeff Greenwald and Christy Hoover, writing for Ethical Traveller, the country is among the most eco-friendly destinations, along with Argentina, Chile, Croatia and Nicaragua, among others.

South Africa scored highly due to its community-based tourism ventures, as well as for species protection and vigilance against poaching.

"Ethical travel is simply mindful travel: an awareness of our impact as we explore the world. We sincerely hope that travellers will refer to this list when planning their 2008 journeys. By visiting the countries mentioned here, we vote with our wings," commented Mr Greenwald and Ms Hoover.

Anyone booking flights to Cape Town or another South African destination is likely to be thrilled by the combination of landscapes, history and culture, reports South Africa Explored.

It has some of the least crowded beaches in the world, along with eight world heritage sites, including the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park.
