Britons spend £40k on holidaysA new poll has revealed the amount of money people spend on their holidays over the course of a lifetime - and it may be more than many people think.

According to the survey, carried out by timeshare provider RCI, individuals in Britain enjoy an average of 840 days abroad each year, spending £39,900 on accommodation.

This was broken down to the average person going abroad twice per year for a week and splashing out £665 on a place to stay.

Simon Calder, TV & radio broadcaster, said: "We all want a holiday to look forward to [and] cheap flights have made us positively promiscuous when it comes to going abroad. It looks as though we may be refocusing on a solid week or two away."

A recent study revealed that anyone looking for a reasonably-priced holiday destination this year may wish to consider booking flights to South Africa.

The Post Office Sightseeing on a Shoestring research found that South Africa was among the best-value travel destinations in the long-haul category.Meet the editors...
