People in Britain will not be put off booking holidays by the credit crunch, it has been claimed.

Robin Tudor, general manager of corporate and community affairs at Liverpool John Lennon Airport, said he thinks the growth in passenger numbers recently seen at the hub will continue because people see their holidays as more essential than other expenses which they may cut back on in times of economic strife.

"Holidays are precious to a lot of people. Maybe they might tighten purse strings and not buy that widescreen TV or new car but they will not give up their two weeks holiday abroad," he remarked to the Liverpool Echo.

Anyone looking for an affordable destination for a break could consider booking flights to South Africa, which Post Office Sightseeing on a Shoestring research recently found to be among the best-value travel destinations in the long-haul category.

A cable car up Cape Town's Table Mountain was judged to be a great trip for families, since the normal child price is waived for the South African winter months.
