South Africa great for January holidaysHolidays to South Africa could be ideal to help ward off the post-Christmas blues, one travel writer has suggested.

Brook Wilkinson, writing for MSNBC.com, said that January is South Africa's summertime and as such, the country is likely to be scorching enough to make anyone forget the misery of a British winter.

She added that this can also result in good deals, with some accommodation up to 40 per cent cheaper during the month. However, travellers should aim for the second half of January - when the children have returned to school - to benefit from quieter beaches, the expert said.

Holidaymakers in South Africa should also take the chance to take a safari trip, Ms Wilkinson remarked.

"Though it can be a bit more difficult to see wildlife in the lush summer vegetation, this is your best chance of seeing the cute babies," she advised.

The BBC states that temperatures in Cape Town during January can reach around 26 degrees C.Meet the editors...
