South Africa 'a great place for a break'

People from the UK looking for an ideal winter break destination that doesn't stretch the wallet too much could do worse than choose holidays to South Africa.

This is according to Matt Rudd of the Sunday Times, who points out that the value of the rand against the pound makes the country a great destination for value. It currently is around 15 to 16.

The expert comments that South Africa is sunny and offers visitors a lack of jet lag since it is within the same time zone as the UK.

He particularly recommends Franschhoek as a location for a visit to the Winelands.

"[A] classy little town in the heart of wine country, it's just over an hour's nonstop drive from Cape Town, although you're going to stop a lot at all the tasting rooms en route, so I'd plan on it taking closer to three," Mr Rudd remarked.
