South African tourism has got excellent prospectsSouth Africa may fare better than many other destinations amid the credit crunch thanks to its profile being raised as host of the 2010 football World Cup.

This is according to Bob East, chief executive of Stella Hospitality Group, who told Business Spectator that the country has got good prospects thanks to the wide range of developments being put in place for the tournament, including improvements in infrastructure and hotels.

He commented that this is similar to the growth of businesses and tourism seen in Sydney around the 2000 Olympic Games.

"Generally speaking [hotels in South Africa are] performing very strongly and they've got great prospects moving forward," Mr East said.

Dumisani Ximbi, mayoral committee member for safety and security in Cape Town, recently said that over a million people are expected to visit the city from November 2008 to January 2009 for South Africa's peak travel season.

Meanwhile, for anyone interested in booking flights to South Africa for the World Cup, the tournament begins in 570 days.Meet the editors...
