Virgin launches wi-fi in the skyVirgin Atlantic has announced that it is to implement wireless internet facilities on its fleet of aircraft.

The carrier will launch the service at a party in San Francisco, with the first wi-fi equipped plane flying over the city to showcase the new facilities.

Passengers will benefit from portable laptops which they can borrow for the flights, as well as Skullcandy headsets, seat to seat chat and power outlets for every individual.

Porter Gale, Virgin vice-president of marketing, said: "Virgin is harnessing the best in technology and design to reinvent flying, by giving our guests A-list amenities and more control."

It is thought that all of its flights will be equipped with wi-fi by the second quarter of 2009.

Last month, Virgin Atlantic announced that it will provide exclusive rock shows on its inflight systems, as well as extra material in its onboard magazine Seatback thanks to a collaboration with NME.
