American Airlines announces paperless boarding passes

American Airlines is piloting a scheme which enables customers to bypass paper boarding passes in favour of a more technical option.

The carrier launched the initiative this week at LAX airport, which allows passengers to receive an email link to their boarding pass when they book flights.

A barcode within is then sent to their mobile phone of PDA, scanned at security checkpoints and then checked again upon boarding the aircraft.

It is hoped that this will be more convenient for passengers, as well as reducing fraudulent activity.

Mark DuPont, American Airlines' vice-president of airport services planning, said: "Mobile boarding is the latest way American Airlines is making travel as easy and convenient as possible, especially for our customers on the go."

American claims to serve around 94 million passengers each year, operating over 4,000 flights a day.

It serves some 250 cities in more than 40 countries and is the world's largest airline.
