Holidays to South Africa are good valueHolidays in South Africa may seem prohibitively glamorous for the average Briton, but Times journalist Robert Wood has argued that this is not the case, especially given the current favourable exchange rate.

The travel writer comments that he was pleased by the price of food on a recent holiday there, with fresh salmon and a glass of Cape wine costing only £12.

He points out that the exchange rate still rests at around 14 rand to the pound, better than is being experienced in Europe and America at the moment.

In addition, such breaks could also help to give something back: "By taking a South African holiday, you could be contributing directly to community projects, even in the most upmarket establishments," Mr Wood said.

England cricketer Kevin Pietersen also advocates holidays in South Africa, saying that he recently took his wife there and was thrilled to have seen two cheetahs at the Simbambili Game Lodge near Kruger.
