British people are sacrificing the number of short city breaks they take in the UK and Europe in order to have more money for their summer travels, potentially including holidays to South Africa.

Britons swap city breaks for longer holidays

British people are sacrificing the number of short city breaks they take in the UK and Europe in order to have more money for their summer travels, potentially including holidays to South Africa.

This is according to a survey by the consultancy firm Laudhouse, cited in the Times, which showed no slowdown in demand for annual family holidays but a fall of a fifth when it came to shorter breaks of around two days.

Crawfor Rix, manager of the budget airline Bmibaby, said he can confirm this trend based on what he has seen.

"Airlines are seeing a weakening in demand for impulsive city breaks and an increase for typical sun destinations; this is a direct result of the current economic climate," he commented to TravelMole.

For those in need of a good value break, South Africa could be ideal due to its currently favourable exchange rate and array of things to do, including safari trips.
