Anyone taking their partner on a romantic break this Valentine's Day - perhaps including those people choosing a trip to South Africa - should make sure they get in touch with their bank first.

This is the advice of Peter Harrison from moneysupermarket.com, who said that people not doing so risk being cut off without any money at their destination - perhaps not the most romantic situation.

He pointed out that banks are getting more strict on transactions made abroad as a result of fraud, so they are likely to cut off any purchases or withdrawals they see as suspicious.

"It is staggering to think that only 31 per cent of people who went overseas last year told their credit or debit card provider they were doing so," Mr Harrison said.

Another thing holidaymakers should not forget is travel insurance - a recent poll carried out by esure found that 20 per cent of people would consider going without.
