South Africa named among worlds best by NY TimesHolidays to South Africa could increase after the New York Times named the destination as among the world's best.

In its annual Places to Go survey, South Africa came 20th according to readers and 34th as ranked by the newspaper's editors on account of its luxurious but affordable outlook.

The travel guide highlighted the safaris, wineries and beaches as some of the best things South Africa has to offer.

"[South Africa is] "becoming one of the best bets for travellers looking for high-end experiences at relatively low-end prices," the New York Times said.

According to official figures from South Africa's tourist board, international arrivals increased by 5.4 per cent between January and October 2008, even though tourism declined by a fifth on a global level.

This could be due to the fact that it still has its own currency and may offer a better alternative to the eurozone and America for people from the UK.
