Mai Mai market suggested for holidays to Johannesburg

Anyone heading to Johannesburg this year should not miss the Mai Mai market, the Canadian Press has suggested.

The market is where a cluster of traditional African healers sell their wares and treat the ill or the unlucky of the city, as well as tourists keen to experience alternative medicine.

Herbs and skulls line the ceiling of shop tents, while items for sale include sandals made from recycled rubber tyres.

One 'sangoma' is Themba Maseko, who used to work in a bank but believes he has now found his true calling, treating everything from unemployment to insomnia.

"I never went back to the bank. I am supposed to be in a place like this," he commented.

The Mai Mai market is situated in Johannesburg city centre, on the corner of Anderson and Berea streets.

It has now been brought under the management of the Metropolitan Trading Company in order to restore the market to its original beauty, Joburg.org attests.Meet the editors...
