IDPs are essential for holidays to South AfricaPeople intending to hire a car on holidays to South Africa may be interested in some advice offered by Sunday Times Travel expert Richard Green.

In response to a reader query about whether or not an International Driver's Permit (IDP) is necessary for holidays to the country, Mr Green said that this is a necessary requirement for anyone who will be driving a hire care there.

"It's really just a standardised way of making your national licence understandable by overseas police and driving authorities," he explained.

IDPs are available from the RAC and the AA, as well as the Post Office, for less than £10.

They can be applied for up to three months before the planned trip, but are only valid with a full national driving licence, Mr Green said.

IDPs are valid for 12 months after the date of issue and applicants must be over the age of 18.Meet the editors...
