South Africa is getting ready for 2010 World CupIn good news for people intending to take holidays to South Africa in time for the Fifa World Cup tournament in 2010, the country is well on its way to being ready to play host.

The first phase of ticket sales will come to an end on March 31st and the Sofia Echo reports that there have been more than half a million applications from 128 countries.

People from the UK made up the second largest group of applicants, second only to residents of South Africa itself and a random draw is to be held on April 15th if matches are over-allocated.

Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the South African 2010 World Cup organising committee, said this week that he is confident all the venues will be ready on time for the event, which kicks off on June 11th next year.

"I was in Durban a week ago, walking through the stadium, it is all in place from the showers to the changing rooms and will be finished," he commented, according to the Mirror.
