Trekking South Africas Otter Trail was exhilaratingTrekking along the Otter Trail while on holidays to South Africa has been described by one travel writer.

Neil Sonnekus said in an article for the Times that the route - situated in Tsitsikamma Coastal National Park in the eastern Cape - is particularly challenging, but that some spectacular scenery can be spotted along the way.

He highlighted the waterfalls, which are reached on the first day of the five-day trek, as being particularly beautiful and compared other scenery to that described in Tolkein's books.

Meanwhile, Mr Sonnekus also listed wildlife that can be seen along the way, including gulls, whales and otters.

However, he said that anyone thinking of taking such holidays should take along good walking boots and poles, as well as plenty of water.

"It was something we'd probably never do again, but everything tasted better," the writer concluded.

The Otter Trail is one of South Africa's most popular walking routes, according to Footprint.co.za, stretching from Storms River mouth to Nature's Valley in the Tsitsikamma National Park.
