Lovers of marine wildlife may want to head on holiday to South Africa this May for the annual sight of the Sardine Run.

Around mid-May each year shoals of Sarinaps Sagas migrate to the warmer waters of the South African coast from the southern Agulhas Banks attracting many other creatures on their way, WhatsonWhen reported.

Dolphins, sharks, whales, game fish and hundreds of diving birds flock to the shores to feast on the bait.

"This feeding frenzy is an amazing sight to see from the shore, better from a boat on the water and best from underwater," wrote the event guide website.

Visitors flying to Cape Town during May will be able to take a dive into the water to see the event first hand with one of the many companies running excursions on the shore.

The opportunity for holidaymakers to try their hand at fishing is "excellent" and many locals simply wait on the coastline for the stranded fish to wash ashore in what has been dubbed as sardine fever. Meet the editors...
