Adventurous travellers may enjoy the Comrades MarathonThe more athletic traveller may wish to fly to South Africa at the end of May to witness the 89-kilometre race through the KwaZulu-Natal Valley.

Comrades Marathon is a "world-renowned" event and lasts for some 12 hours, wrote WhatsOnWhen.

Some 20,000 people take part in the race which heads up and downhill from Pietermaritzburg City Hall to the Sahara Kingsmead Cricket Stadium in Durban.

"The scenery is breathtaking and the support from crowds along the road is excellent," added the events guide website.

It continued: "True to its name the comradeship on the road is inspiring," as athletes in the past have carried struggling comrades over the finish line.

According to the tourist board, the KwaZulu-Natal Valley - the Kingdom of the Zulu - is known as the Valley of a Thousand Hills, which border the Umgeni River that flows out into the Indian Ocean.

It adds that the region benefits from a warm sub-tropical climate throughout most of the year. Meet the editors...
