South Africa has many attractions up its sleeve

The KwaZulu-Natal province in South Africa has many attractions that holidaymakers might not necessarily be aware of, the tourist board has said.

One of the region's claims to fame is having some of the "world's best beaches" with sea temperatures remaining between 20 and 28 degrees - even in winter - claimed the Zulu Kingdom.

The area is also home to "the number one shark diving area in the world" at Sodwana, with Aliwal Shoal and Protea Banks also nearby.

Some 470 different species of bird are seen regularly in the Zulu Kingdom - the largest density in South Africa - and there are also opportunities to see the Big Five mammals.

Evidence of the Stone Age is also apparent in the province, with more than a million artefacts discovered in the area including Border Cave - where some of the earliest Homo sapiens remains have been found.

South Africa has a population of 47 million people and has 11 different official languages.
