World Cup boosting demand for flights to South Africa

The World Cup is attracting more tourists and increasing demand for flights to South Africa.

Research conducted by Visa has shown the 2010 FIFA tournament has prompted a rise in interest in travellers heading to the country.

Charles Niehaus, managing director of Visa Sub-Saharan Africa, explained tourism offerings have been improved in preparation for the football competition.

As a result, the corporation's findings have revealed a boost in spending in South Africa. It stated the first quarter of 2009 saw cardholders spend $500 million (£305 million) in the country.

Mozambique accounted for $21 million of that figure, which represents a 160 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Mr Niehaus commented: "The 2010 FIFA World Cup will provide a significant opportunity to position South Africa as a desirable leisure destination."

According to FIFA, one South African city has particular appeal.

The organisation stated Polokwane, one of the destinations chosen to host games throughout the event, is an "unknown city with a rich culture and strong appeal".
