People planning holidays to South Africa for next year's World Cup will probably be pleased to learn that the new stadium in Cape Town has been completed.

New Cape Town stadium celebrates completion

Construction on the new Cape Town stadium has been completed on schedule, in news that may please many football fans around the world.

The Green Point stadium will have space for 68,000 spectators, although 13,000 of these seats will be removed after the World Cup.

Described on the Fifa website as "one of the most artistic football venues in South Africa", it is likely to wow fans when they arrive for the first World Cup match to be played at the stadium on June 11th next year.

It is also claimed that Green Point is the birthplace of South African football, with the first recorded public match played at the site in 1862.

The venue has a similar appearance to the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany, with fibreglass sides that can be lit up at night, making the stadium a spectacular addition to the Cape Town skyline.

It also features a glass roof over the facility, which will let natural light in but also contain the noise.
