Anyone booking holidays to South Africa should consider travelling by rail during their visit to the country, one travel journalist has advised.

People taking holidays to South Africa should think about taking the three-day train journey from Pretoria to Cape Town, a travel journalist has suggested.

Writing for the Daily Telegraph, Nick Hewitt explained that jumping on a train is a much more relaxing way to travel than by driving across the vast country.

The journey from Pretoria to Cape Town is over 2,000 km, Mr Hewitt noted, adding to the appeal of rail travel.

He recommended taking one of the tours run by Rovos Rail, which utilises restored steam engines to transport guests across the country.

"Waking up on a train and lying there watching the sun climb as the African bush slides by takes a lot of beating," Mr Hewitt commented.

The trains run by Rovos Rail include two dining cars offering a range of food and fine wines for travellers to enjoy during their trip.

Mr Hewitt's journey may inspire some of the many English football fans expected to arrive in the country later this year for the World Cup.

With England's initial matches being played in Rustenburg, Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, supporters may prefer a leisurely train ride to a long drive.
