Flights to South Africa for this year's World Cup need not mean breaking the bank, as football enthusiasts can expect to find some budget accommodation options on arrival.

World Cup fans can keep South Africa trip costs down

People booking flights to South Africa and accommodation in the country's World Cup host cities have been offered tips from Lonely Planet on how to manage the costs of what may be a once in a lifetime trip.

Lonely Planet travel editor Tom Hall explains that there are some tips that he would apply in this instance that would not normally be recommended to long-haul travellers.

They include booking accommodation three months before the World Cup begins, when unreserved room allocations become available - as other hotels are likely to already be booked up in full.

However, for those who have flights to South Africa but no accommodation, he points out that camping and self-catering are both options.

For people who do head to the region, Mr Hall dismisses any safety concerns, although he admits that personal security remains an important thing to consider.

"I imagine people are going to be surprised at just how safe they feel," he asserts.
