Visit spectacular gardens on holidays to South AfricaSouth Africa offers travellers an opportunity to explore some stunning gardens, it has been claimed.

In a list compiled by the Daily Telegraph of the best exotic gardens around the world, South Africa's Garden Route was at the top.

Gardening specialist Joanna Fortnam stated that the native plant life in the country is spectacular and a must-see for any green-fingered travellers.

She highlighted the nine botanic gardens that comprise the South African National Biodiversity Institute and pointed out that four are located in close proximity to Cape Town.

This includes Kirstenbosch, which Ms Fortnam described as "world-famous".

She went on to explain that many plants transported to Britain during the Victorian era - including red hot pokers and gladiolus, which are now common in gardens around the country - originated in South Africa.

Taking a trip along the Garden Route could prove to be a welcome escape from the crowds of football fans due to descend on the country in the summer for the World Cup, which kicks off in Johannesburg on June 11th.
