Visit South Africa for one of travels strangest experiencesPeople who enjoy travelling to different countries to see something out of the ordinary may want to think about booking flights to South Africa to witness one of its natural spectacles.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the flowers in the desert in Namaqualand are one of the ten strangest travel experiences on offer to holidaymakers.

The phenomenon happens every year between August and October, when tourists in the region can expect to see "the otherwise arid landscape transform into a bright carpet of blossoming spring flowers".

However, the publication warned that the appearance of the blooms does depend on the area getting sufficient winter rains.

It recommended taking a tour in a 4x4 vehicle to see the most of the desert landscape during a trip.

More adventurous travellers may want to take advantage of an alternative mode of transport to view the flowers.

Canoeing tours along the Orange River, which runs through Namaqualand, are available, with guides on hand to show visitors the wonders of the region and ensure they travel along the waterway safely.
