Cape Town "buzzing with football fever"Those who are booking flights to Cape Town ahead of next month's World Cup kickoff in South Africa will find that the city is "buzzing with football fever", according to a writer.

Gemma O'Doherty of the Irish Independent wrote that the city has undergone "the mother of all makeovers" in recent years in preparation for the international sporting event.

Calling Cape Town "Africa's most photogenic city", Ms O'Doherty enthused that it is looking "more gorgeous than ever".

She suggested that visitors to the city for the World Cup also take time to explore the surrounding region by car and take a trip down the "epic" Cape Peninsula.

While this journey to the Cape of Good Hope - the most south-westerly point in Africa - takes little more than two hours, it may be worth setting aside an entire day to explore all of the sights along the way, including the penguins at Boulder's Beach and the cafes and antique shops in Simon's Town.

"Twisting high above the Atlantic Ocean, it makes for exhilarating driving with view after view of crashing waves, glorious beaches and cliffs," Ms O'Doherty wrote.

World Cup matches get underway on June 11th, with the final taking place a month later on July 11th.
