Tourists unaware of South Africa money rules

Holidaymakers who have booked flights to South Africa ahead of next month's World Cup tournament will need to make themselves aware of the country's cash limit.

Sainsbury's Travel Money has discovered that 74 per cent of the people planning on travelling to the African nation this summer have no idea that they will only be able to take a maximum of 5,000 rand (£445) in or out of the country.

However, 36 per cent of those questioned planned to take over £450 worth of South African currency with them, with the average being £665 in local money.

With this figure being way over the permitted limit, holidaymakers could face having their cash confiscated on entering the country.

Scott Gorman, head of Sainsbury's Travel Money, said: "Our research shows thousands of people may be taken by surprise at the currency import regulations in place when entering South Africa."

England's first match in the tournament is on June 12th, when the team will face the USA.
