The Daily Telegraph has highlighted wilderness lodges where holidaymakers can get a real taste of the plant and animal life there.

Tswalu in the Kalahari is one recommendation, with rare species such as the black-maned lion and the endangered black rhino just two of the creatures those taking cheap flights to South Africa are likely to see.

Bushman's Kloof in Western Cape has also been highlighted, with more than 130 sites boasting ancient bushman paintings.

Samara Private Game Reserve is another place holidaymakers may want to visit.

"Expect to see buffalo, black wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, white rhino and, most excitingly, cheetah," the newspaper concluded.

Jill Mawrocki, writing on BootsnAll, recently recommended that visitors to South Africa take a tour of the Cape Peninsula, where they can see African penguins among other animals.
