Reports suggest that Velvet Sky could show increase competition in the industry, although details of the new venture remain unconfirmed, Business Day revealed.

The South African Civil Aviation Authority has revealed that it is currently considering an application for an air operator certificate for an unnamed company. Issuing of a certificate and an air service licence are required for a new airline planning to operate commercial flights in the country.

A statement from the authority said: "In this case, the evaluation of the application is at an advanced stage and it is envisaged that the process will be concluded within a few weeks ... the applicant in question will offer scheduled commercial services to and from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban."

South African Airways is currently the largest airline operating in the country and covers a number of routes, including flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town and Upington.
