World tourism on the rise

There was an increase in tourism in 2010, according to new figures from the United Nations.

There was an increase in tourism in 2010, according to new figures from the United Nations.

According to the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) there was a seven per cent increase in tourist activity as economics started to recovery from recession.

"Boosted by improved economic conditions worldwide, international tourism has recovered faster than expected from the impacts of the global financial crisis and economic recession of late 2008 and 2009," said a statement from UNWTO.

Overall, international tourist arrivals rose by 6.7 per cent to total 935 million - compared to 913 million in 2008.

In particular, emerging nations have shown strong recovery as tourists continue to look for value for money.

Figures also showed that major sporting events had encouraged greater visitors for some reasons, for instance the 2010 FIFA World Cup led to many taking flights to South Africa in the summer.

The UNWTO represents a total of 154 countries in seven different territories.
